About the movie:
This film is a time-tunnel trip to a Cold-War-Spy-Thriller movie era and there lies its rather faded charm. A thriller with superficial political innuendos, not hard to guess plot twists, and then unpronounceable sex issues (nymphomania, just mentioned very obliquely of course). All of it based on the novel by then-omnipresent John Le Carré -- the thinking man's answer to Ian Fleming -- featuring a nice bossa-nova theme moodily sung by Brazilian Astrud Gilberto, a jazzy score by Quincy Jones and a classy international cast.Oh lala ... what a critic! But everybody, who love Quincy´s work, knows that the music to this movie is quite good. Not the best soundtrack from him, but well worth a listen for diggers and non-diggers. So give this album a try and let me know what you think folks!!!
This is a film from a time when thriller plots were supposed to be "honest", meaning the director/screenwriters gave the viewers clues to actually outguess the plot (very unlike today, when plot twists are so convoluted and far-fetched you just have to exercise suspension of disbelief, and when the umpteenth outrageous plot twist comes you just roll your eyes and sigh "Oh Jeees..."). A film from a time when tricky games of international espionage and counter-espionage were something average people could still grasp... Well, in "Deadly Affair" you'll probably outguess the plot in advance if you don't fall sleep with so much talking. Maybe the real problem is that Lumet wanted to entertain AND make a ponderous political thriller as well, but Costa- Gavras he ain't!!
The real shame here is the waste of the female cast. While James Mason, Maximilian Schell and Harry Andrews have fun with their roles, the two leading ladies, both great actresses, were treated badly. Simone Signoret's face is always fascinating, but her role is underwritten, unexplored and utterly dislikable. And what to say about poor Harriet Andersson? She -- who did such great acting jobs for Bergman, including one of the most difficult of them all, the schizophrenic Karin in "Through a Glass Darkly" -- is completely miscast, badly dubbed, badly photographed, badly directed. Please don't judge her for this movie, it's probably her worst performance ever!

Thax for you postes. Have listen to Mr. Jones. It was a time a go. It has a classic thriller sound with a cool touch. It's not touched by heaven this time but it's still good. But I guess that you should already like Big Q to like this. You don't get a halleluja moment with this if it's your first Q time. But hey We love and adore Q so who cares if they don't like it we do and that's fine. Now I will try Cortex. Have heard this one, but it was some time ago so it will be nice thax for everything

I too have this on vinyl [ in my basement somewhere ]. I loved it as a kid, but haven't seen or heard it since ]. Thanks for posting it, now i can elive my youth...lol
